THE BURGLAR - DIRECTORS STATEMENT
I've toured nationally and internationally (Japan, Australia, Canada, Greenland, and the USA) as a professional magician/illusionist for over 20 years. My co-director Jim Torres asked me if we could create a comedy short movie that incorporated magic, magic tricks, or some type of magic realism in it. I started brainstorming ideas and came up with our story. If a loser is granted everything he could wish for... what would happen to him? Very early on, we decided to visually create something that was "old school" and "new school" in the same film. For instance, we used "locked camera" shots to magically make things change (very much like film pioneer George Melies was doing in 1905) but we also used the latest digital visual effects our visual effects guy... Daniel Broadway... could come up with. All in the same 7 minute short! Movies are great to do stuff that I just couldn't do on a live magic stage. It's fabulous to be funny and a little creepy at the same time.THE BURGLAR - PRODUCTION NOTES
"Drunk guys crash set at two in the morning" It was 2am in the morning on a Saturday night and we were shooting a scene on the back streets of Sheffield, Alabama. It's a sleepy town where nothing much happens. The Burglar... our protagonist... is supposed to drive by a bum and magically transform him into a package of weenies. Tonight we're set to shoot the bum and his locked shot transformation into a package of weenies. We set the shot. Lit the lights. Locked the camera on our actor/bum and were standing by to shoot, when two really really drunk guys drove past us. They slammed on the breaks (we know because we could hear the sound two blocks away) and screeched to a halt. They'd just spontanesously realized... that they really really really needed to be in a movie and they ran over and told us so. Before this could get badly out of hand, our director... says, "no problem. Sit down and you two guys can be bums too." They proceed to sit down with our actor/bum and start singing drinking songs while embracing and hugging him with enthusiasm. They then get up and drive away. Our actor/bum was in shock for 3 days.CAST LIST -
